Retired Colonel Sam Ahmedu has publicly backed former Nigerian international Olumide Oyedeji as a key figure to help stabilize the country’s basketball scene after years of administrative disputes and leadership turmoil. Ahmedu, who serves as President of FIBA Africa Zone 3, believes Oyedeji’s experience and reputation can bring much‑needed credibility and direction to the sport.

The endorsement came after a crucial meeting in Abuja convened by the National Sports Commission, where stakeholders expressed a rare sense of unity about the future of the Nigeria Basketball Federation. Ahmedu emphasised that restoring order will require structure, dialogue, and strict adherence to legal processes rather than force or improvisation.

Central to Ahmedu’s vision is a properly conducted elective congress for the basketball federation, targeted for or before March 31, which he says should be the foundation for legitimate leadership and lasting peace. He urged all parties to remain calm and resist shortcuts or power grabs that could undermine progress.

Oyedeji, a former NBA player and long‑serving captain of the national team who represented Nigeria at multiple international competitions, is seen by Ahmedu as someone uniquely qualified to help refocus the sport on performance, development, and unity.
