The Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) has started training 100 young people from Ogoniland in mechatronics engineering, a field that combines mechanical, electrical, and digital system skills. The programme aims to give participants valuable technical abilities that are in demand in the oil and gas industry, especially as talks continue about resuming oil exploration in the region.

The initiative was launched at the University of Port Harcourt’s engineering department, where HYPREP officials and partners flagged off the training. HYPREP’s Project Coordinator, Prof. Nenibarini Zabbey, said the programme was part of the agency’s promise to shift local youths from basic vocational skills to more advanced, industry‑relevant expertise.

Representatives explained that the training combines classroom lessons with practical, hands‑on experience, including later industrial exposure at facilities in Port Harcourt. Trainees are being encouraged to make the most of the opportunity, as it could help them participate more fully in future oil and gas work.

University officials praised the partnership with HYPREP and said the training could open doors to employment and innovation. Organisers also emphasized safety, teamwork, and problem‑solving skills as key parts of the programme.
