Tensions Rise Between House Leadership and Minority Caucus Over Tax Law Probe

Tensions have flared between Nigeria’s House of Representatives and its Minority Caucus over attempts to investigate alleged unauthorized changes to recent tax legislation.

The Minority Caucus set up its own ad hoc committee, led by Afam Ogene, claiming that the officially published versions of the tax laws differ from what the National Assembly passed. The caucus argues that these discrepancies could undermine legislative authority and the rule of law.

House leadership, however, dismissed the caucus’s committee as lacking formal authorization. They emphasized that only the full House or the Speaker has the power to establish committees with investigative authority. According to the leadership, caucuses do not have the mandate to conduct official probes.

Meanwhile, an existing bipartisan committee, established in December 2025 to look into similar concerns, is still active and expected to submit its findings to the House soon. Certified copies of the tax laws have also been released to clarify their official status.

Political analysts say the dispute underscores the friction between minority lawmakers’ advocacy efforts and the formal procedures governing legislative oversight in Nigeria.
