Police officers in Lagos on Wednesday fired tear gas to disperse residents protesting against ongoing evictions and demolition exercises in parts of the state.
The protesters had gathered to express anger over the demolition of their homes and the displacement of families, accusing authorities of carrying out the exercise without adequate notice, compensation, or resettlement plans.
Videos circulating on social media showed tense moments as security operatives moved in to break up the protest, forcing many demonstrators to flee the area after tear gas was deployed.
Residents affected by the demolitions said the action had left many families homeless and struggling, calling on the Lagos State Government to suspend further demolitions and engage in dialogue with affected communities.
The protest was eventually brought under control as security agencies increased their presence to prevent further unrest, while traffic and commercial activities in the area were temporarily disrupted.
