Cocoa farmers in Nigeria have raised concerns over the uncertain status of the proposed Cocoa Board Establishment bill, calling on the federal government to provide clarity. The Cocoa Farmers Association of Nigeria and the Cocoa Farmers Alliance Association of Africa emphasized that the prolonged delay in communication has left stakeholders across the sector confused.
The bill, first introduced in November 2025, was reportedly withdrawn shortly after its presentation to the National Assembly for revisions. Since then, no updates have been shared, leaving farmers, processors, and investors unsure of the government’s next steps.
Farmers pointed out that public statements suggesting the board’s reinstatement are misleading, as no legislation has yet been passed to make it operational. They stressed that a functional board is critical for improving sector coordination, supporting research, raising quality standards, and promoting sustainability.
The associations urged President Bola Tinubu and lawmakers to accelerate action on the bill and communicate a clear timeline to ensure the cocoa industry can develop in a structured and competitive manner.
