The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has urged the National Assembly to ensure that election results are transmitted electronically from polling units to a national portal immediately after counting. The association emphasized that mandatory electronic transmission is crucial to boosting public confidence in elections and reducing the risk of result manipulation.
At a recent council meeting, NBA officials called on lawmakers to pass amendments requiring the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to upload results in real time once official forms are signed and verified. They warned that making this process optional weakens legal safeguards and could create loopholes in future elections.
The NBA highlighted that clear laws on electronic result transmission would enhance transparency, strengthen democratic accountability, and reassure voters about the credibility of outcomes. The association stressed that timely and accurate reporting is vital for maintaining trust in Nigeria’s electoral system.
The body reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for legal reforms that protect the integrity of elections, urging lawmakers to prioritize measures that uphold transparency and fairness in the democratic process.
