Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno has insisted that the state’s ownership of 76 offshore oil wells is secure, stating that no propaganda or public pressure can overturn the legal rulings supporting these rights. He emphasized that Supreme Court decisions clearly affirm Akwa Ibom’s claim and urged residents to remain calm amid recent disputes.
The controversy involves a long-standing disagreement with neighbouring Cross River State, which has challenged Akwa Ibom’s ownership based on updated geological claims. Governor Eno maintained that the boundary between the states is legally determined and that Akwa Ibom’s maritime rights remain protected under Nigerian law.
Eno expressed confidence in the federal government’s commitment to uphold the rule of law, warning that attempts to undermine the state’s legal victories would not succeed. He stressed that the matter should be assessed based on court judgments rather than public sentiment.
The governor encouraged citizens to avoid alarm and focus on constructive dialogue, assuring that Akwa Ibom remains committed to defending its lawful entitlements as affirmed by the judiciary.
