The Sokoto State Government has set aside ₦1 billion for a new food support initiative during the holy month of Ramadan, designed to feed tens of thousands of residents in the state.
At a launch event in Sokoto city, Governor Ahmed Aliyu unveiled the programme, which aims to deliver about 34,000 meals every day to people in need throughout the fasting period.
To widen its reach, the state has increased the number of distribution centres from 155 to 170, with each centre expected to serve around 200 people at a time. The governor emphasised that the meals will be prepared to high standards of hygiene and quality, and that additional staff have been brought on board to ensure smooth operations.
Aliyu explained that the feeding scheme is part of broader efforts to support social welfare and strengthen community bonds. He encouraged religious organisations, philanthropists, and members of the public to complement the government’s efforts by helping those less fortunate during the fasting season.
Officials involved in the programme say logistics are fully in place to ensure transparent and effective delivery of services, and community and religious leaders at the launch praised the initiative for its potential to reduce hunger and hardship among the state’s residents.
