Nigeria’s data protection authority has launched an investigation into the online marketplace Temu amid concerns that the company may not be fully complying with the country’s data privacy laws.
The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) will examine how Temu collects, stores, and transfers personal information of users in Nigeria, focusing on whether the platform is maintaining transparency, limiting unnecessary data collection, and safeguarding user privacy.
Temu, a popular global e‑commerce platform, manages the personal data of millions of Nigerians, which has drawn regulatory attention given the scale of information involved. Any evidence of improper handling could result in enforcement actions under the Nigeria Data Protection Act.
The probe also serves as a reminder to other digital companies operating in Nigeria that strict adherence to local privacy standards is essential, especially when processing user information across borders.
