In response to deadly clashes linked to a boundary dispute between communities in Ebonyi State, Governor Francis Nwifuru has modified movement restrictions in the Amasiri area while signalling stronger measures if progress isn’t made toward accountability.
During a meeting of the state security council, the governor announced that the lengthy overnight curfew in Amasiri has been eased, allowing residents to move freely during daytime hours. However, schools in the community will remain closed for the foreseeable future as authorities continue investigations into recent violent incidents.
The unrest began after an ambush in the neighbouring Okporojo area that resulted in multiple deaths and drew widespread concern. In earlier weeks, state officials dissolved leadership structures within Amasiri and removed political appointees in connection with the crisis.
Governor Nwifuru stressed that if the community cannot assist in uncovering the circumstances around the attacks – including returning missing evidence tied to the violence – additional strict measures will be applied to ensure compliance and justice. Security agencies have already arrested suspects, and the governor affirmed they will face prosecution as part of efforts to bring stability back to the affected region.
