Opposition Accuses Government of Undermining Democratic Norms Ahead of 2027 Polls

Opposition voices have stepped up criticism of President Bola Tinubu and Senate President Godswill Akpabio, claiming recent political developments could weaken confidence in the country’s electoral process ahead of the next general elections.

Critics say a wave of endorsements, high-profile defections, and growing dominance by the ruling All Progressives Congress may create the impression that future elections are becoming less competitive. According to them, democracy depends on strong opposition participation and transparent contest, not overwhelming one-party control.

Supporters of the administration reject the allegations, arguing that political realignments and endorsements are normal in a democracy. They maintain that current policies and legislative actions are focused on governance, economic recovery, and institutional stability rather than electoral manipulation.

Meanwhile, opposition groups are urging the Independent National Electoral Commission to strengthen safeguards, improve transparency, and reassure voters that upcoming elections will remain open, credible, and fully competitive.
