Police officers reportedly forced their way into a hospital in Abuja on Tuesday evening in an effort to detain a man receiving treatment for severe injuries.
The patient had previously been in police custody and was brought to the medical facility after showing signs of serious health problems, including bleeding. Hospital staff warned officers about his fragile condition, but the police continued to attempt to remove him from care.
A court order obtained earlier barred security personnel from arresting the man while he remains under treatment, but that directive appears to have been ignored during the operation. Lawyers and rights advocates criticized the move, arguing that enforcing an arrest while someone is critically ill could endanger their life and violate the law.
No official statement has yet been released by the Nigeria Police Force regarding the hospital incident. Authorities are expected to clarify their actions in the coming days.
