Cross River Communities Struggle with Long‑Standing Electricity Blackouts

Residents across several parts of Cross River State are expressing growing frustration over the persistent lack of reliable electricity, saying the irregular power supply is hurting local businesses and daily life.

In communities such as Boki and Ikom local government areas, people report going long periods without grid electricity, leaving shops, workshops, and homes in darkness. One trader explained that his small business has suffered significant losses because of the unreliable power, while another resident said the ongoing outages have made life difficult and unsafe after sundown.

Many residents say the disruption has gone on for years, with some areas experiencing almost continuous blackouts for over a decade. Local voices are now calling on both state and federal authorities to take meaningful action to improve the situation.

Responding to the complaints, the state’s Commissioner for Power admitted that the electricity service has been poor in parts of the state and promised that repairs and improvements are underway, with better supply expected soon.
