Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has spent a second night in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Abuja as investigations into alleged corruption continue.
El-Rufai has been with the anti-graft agency since Monday after honouring its invitation for questioning over allegations of fraud linked to his tenure as governor between 2015 and 2023.
A source within the EFCC told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday night that the former governor would remain in custody while interrogations were ongoing.
“As I am speaking with you, the former governor is still being questioned and will be spending the night with investigators,” the source said, adding that the commission is committed to conducting a thorough and professional probe into the allegations.
“I can assure you that the EFCC will diligently address all the issues raised against him,” the source added.
The official declined to disclose when El-Rufai might be released or formally charged, stating that it would depend on the outcome and progress of the investigation.
Meanwhile, El-Rufai’s media aide, Muyiwa Adekeye, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Monday. He said the former governor responded to the EFCC’s invitation and held what he described as frank and productive discussions with officials of the commission.
Adekeye also noted that El-Rufai’s legal team commended the professionalism displayed by EFCC investigators during the engagement, adding that the former governor remained with the commission after the meeting.
The detention follows El-Rufai’s recent return to Nigeria from Cairo, Egypt, marking the latest development in a series of events that began last Thursday.
