Former Vice President of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has commended Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, for what he described as purposeful and people-centered leadership that is repositioning the state for sustainable growth and prosperity.

Prof. Osinbajo gave the commendation on Wednesday, February 18, during a visit to the Governor at his office, which coincided with Dr. Otti’s birthday. He expressed appreciation for the Governor’s hospitality and lauded his performance in office, noting that the true essence of public service lies in making meaningful differences in the lives of the people.

“I am extremely proud of the work you have done so far. You have lived up to expectations—not only to the people but also to your friends and associates. In the short time I have been here, I have seen tangible evidence of progress,” Osinbajo said.

The former Vice President particularly praised Governor Otti’s social welfare reforms, including his assent to the Senior Citizens’ Law. He described the initiative as compassionate and socially responsible, stressing that the world’s most effective welfare systems are built on care for the vulnerable.

He also applauded the ongoing road infrastructure renewal and improved connectivity across the state, describing them as clear symbols of purposeful and results-driven leadership. Reflecting on the demands of public office, Prof. Osinbajo noted that while many aspire to leadership positions, true distinction lies in delivering on promises.

“Sometimes you wonder whether, after all the efforts to get into office, leaders are able to fulfill their promises. But in your case, you have done not just what you promised, but even more. You have made public service worthwhile,” he added.

Prof. Osinbajo prayed for renewed strength, wisdom, and divine favour for Governor Otti as he continues his transformation agenda in Abia State.

In his response, Governor Otti warmly welcomed the former Vice President, describing him as a brother, friend, and mentor whose visit he deeply appreciated.

The Governor clarified that the gathering was not a formal birthday celebration but simply a modest observance of the day, noting that he rarely celebrates such occasions publicly, particularly while in office. He expressed gratitude to well-wishers who attended voluntarily and reiterated his preference for focusing on service.

Governor Otti thanked God for the progress recorded within 32 months of his administration, describing the achievements as modest but impactful. He maintained that governance must remain centered on the welfare and security of the people.

“Governance is about the people—their welfare, their safety, and their peace of mind. If you enter office for any other reason, you miss the essence of leadership,” he said.

The Governor recalled decisive actions taken during his first month in office to reclaim some local government areas that were under the control of non-state actors. He noted that firm intervention restored order and ensured that previously inaccessible communities are now safe and open to residents.

He also commended security agencies for their dedication and sacrifices in maintaining peace and stability across the state.

“We are grateful to the men and women who stay awake so that our people can sleep in peace,” Otti stated.

Earlier, the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Emmanuel Meribeole, on behalf of the State Executive Council, extended warm birthday wishes to the Governor and prayed for continued strength and fruitful years ahead.

Representatives of leading financial institutions, including Access Bank, First Bank, and UBA, also described Governor Otti as a model of credible and ethical leadership at a time when the nation seeks inspiring examples of public service. They noted that his administration has become a benchmark for excellence, demonstrating that visionary leadership can deliver real change.

The goodwill messages were accompanied by prayers for good health, wisdom, and greater accomplishments as the Governor continues his efforts to build a new Abia.
