Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has issued a sharp warning to the administration of President Bola Tinubu, saying the government will be held responsible if anything untoward happens to former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El‑Rufai while he remains in custody.

Atiku’s statement comes amid growing concern about El‑Rufai’s health and the circumstances of his detention, which has drawn criticism from political figures and civil society groups calling for transparency and respect for due process.

The ex‑vice president demanded that the government disclose which agency is holding El‑Rufai and provide clear information about his condition, access to family and legal counsel. He urged officials to ensure that El‑Rufai’s rights are protected and emphasised that secrecy only fuels public suspicion.

Atiku’s remarks contribute to a broader debate over civil liberties and governance in Nigeria, as critics of the administration express unease over what they describe as an erosion of democratic norms.

Meanwhile, calls for greater openness and adherence to legal standards have increased, with observers stressing that respect for the rule of law is crucial for public trust in state institutions.
