The Senate Leader of the 10th National Assembly, Opeyemi Bamidele, has pledged an annual N1 billion research fund for lecturers at the Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences (FUTES), Iyin-Ekiti.

During his address, Bamidele outlined ambitious expansion plans aimed at enhancing both academic and research capabilities at the university. He disclosed that while FUTES currently operates four faculties, plans are underway to establish three more. Engagements with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria are also ongoing to ensure compliance with accreditation requirements, particularly regarding the provision of necessary structures and equipment.
Bamidele further revealed plans to develop a comprehensive medical complex, a “Medical Village”,that will include a hospital with an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), a Diagnostic Centre equipped with MRI and CT scanning machines, an Eye Care Centre, a Dental Care Centre, and a Kidney and Dialysis Centre.
He stated, “While we celebrate this milestone, I am mindful of the work ahead. We have a permanent site to complete, additional faculty buildings under construction, and critical medical facilities to develop. Beyond infrastructure, university education is about research. For the next five years, I will make available N200 million annually to support research and academic work. This may be modest, but it reflects our commitment to strengthening this institution. Partnerships with government and the private sector will ensure sustainable support for the university.”
In his remarks, Vice-Chancellor Professor Gbenga Aribisala noted that FUTES commenced academic activities within a year of its establishment, offering 36 departments across four faculties. He described the university as a citadel of learning poised to rank among leading global institutions within its first decade.
Professor Aribisala emphasized that FUTES’ mission is to advance humanity through transformative learning grounded in innovative teaching and research. He urged pioneer students to uphold discipline and ethical values, warning against antisocial behaviors such as drug abuse, sexual assault, and intimidation.
Representing the Governor of Ekiti, Biodun Oyebanji, Dr. Azeez Mayowa praised President Bola Tinubu for assenting to the university’s establishment bill and commended Senator Bamidele for ensuring that academic activities commenced within the first year.
