Low Voter Turnout Sparks Calls to Revise Electoral Act

Political analyst Prof. Pat Utomi has raised concerns over the effectiveness of Nigeria’s recently passed Electoral Act 2026, warning that the law may not reflect the needs and expectations of ordinary citizens.

Utomi pointed to the extremely low turnout in the recent Federal Capital Territory Area Council elections, describing it as a clear sign that many Nigerians feel disconnected from the political process. He stressed that a democratic law should encourage participation, not discourage it.

The expert suggested that lawmakers should review the legislation to ensure it builds trust and interest among voters, rather than imposing rules that alienate the public.

His remarks come as discussions continue nationwide about the changes introduced in the Electoral Act, with political parties, civil society groups, and citizens debating how the law will shape the conduct of the 2027 general elections.
