Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called for stronger commitment toward advancing the rights and empowerment of women and girls, emphasizing that their progress is vital to Nigeria’s development.

In her message marking the 2026 International Women’s Day, Mrs. Tinubu joined Nigerians and the global community in celebrating the strength, courage and achievements of women across the country and worldwide.

She said the annual celebration provides an opportunity to recognise the important roles women play in families, communities and national development, while also reminding society of the need to promote gender equality and inclusion.

According to the First Lady, this year’s theme, “Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls,” highlights the need for practical steps that will ensure women enjoy equal opportunities and full protection under the law.

Mrs. Tinubu stressed that empowering women should be seen as a strategic investment in the nation’s future rather than an act of charity.

She explained that when women have access to education, quality healthcare, economic opportunities, leadership roles and justice, the entire society benefits.

The First Lady noted that empowering women strengthens families, builds stronger communities and contributes to a more inclusive and sustainable nation.

She also reaffirmed the commitment of President Bola Tinubu’s administration to policies and initiatives aimed at improving the welfare, dignity and advancement of Nigerian women and girls.

Mrs. Tinubu therefore urged government institutions, the private sector, civil society organisations and development partners to continue working together to remove barriers that limit women’s participation in national development.

She further encouraged Nigerian women and girls to remain determined and resilient in pursuing their goals and contributing to the country’s progress.

“When women rise, Nigeria rises,” she stated.

The First Lady concluded by wishing Nigerian women and girls a happy International Women’s Day and urged renewed commitment to building a society where every woman and girl can thrive.
