What began as a routine media coverage quickly transformed into a full scale investigative mission led by renowned investigative journalist Chi Chi Umesaka, popularly known across the media landscape as Aunty Chi. Determined to verify the claims surrounding Abia State’s digital healthcare initiative, she mobilized and personally led a strong team of journalists from major national and regional media houses including Channels Television, TVC, Arise Television, Masters TV and several others on an on the ground investigative tour.

Refusing to rely on press statements or official briefings alone, Aunty Chi insisted that the journalists must witness the project directly. Her approach turned the media visit into a practical verification exercise. The investigative team first traveled to Umudike in Ikwuano Local Government Area of Abia State, where they began examining the digital healthcare infrastructure before proceeding deeper into the rural community of Umuenyere Alayi in Bende Local Government Area.

At Umudike, the journalists observed how the telemedicine framework was being integrated into the health system, connecting patients with doctors through digital platforms. The visit allowed the media team to understand the operational structure of the program before heading to one of the most remote locations where the system was being tested.

The journey then continued to Umuenyere Alayi, a village that has reportedly existed without electricity for over five years and has struggled with weak or nonexistent internet connectivity. It was here that the investigative team witnessed what many described as a surprising breakthrough. Residents were actively accessing professional healthcare through telemedicine devices installed in the community.

Through smart health cards, villagers were seen scanning into medical machines that instantly recorded vital indicators such as blood pressure, oxygen levels, pulse rate and body temperature. The data collected from the machines was immediately transmitted digitally to doctors who monitored the patients remotely and provided medical guidance without the patients traveling to urban hospitals.

According to Abia state commissioner for Health , the system was designed to eliminate the geographical barriers that have historically denied rural communities access to quality healthcare. He explained that the initiative allows doctors within Nigeria and even specialists abroad to co manage cases, making professional medical care accessible even in villages previously considered unreachable.

Another important aspect uncovered during the investigation was the role of local nurses who serve as the bridge between villagers and remote doctors. These nurses assist residents in filling out digital health questionnaires and communicating symptoms effectively, ensuring that even patients who cannot read or write can receive consultations and treatment through the system.

For many journalists on the tour, the experience reinforced the importance of investigative verification. By insisting on visiting the communities herself and leading journalists across different media platforms, Aunty Chi ensured that the story was told from direct observation rather than assumptions.

Her bold investigative leadership once again highlighted why Chi Chi Umesaka, popularly called Aunty Chi, continues to command respect across the media space. Through her commitment to transparency and fact finding journalism, the media team was able to witness firsthand what many experts now describe as a potential African model for achieving Universal Health Coverage even in the most remote communities.
