Governor Alex Otti has reaffirmed his administration’s determination to strengthen the education sector in Abia State, stressing that sustained investment in schools and teachers remains a major priority of his government.
The governor made the remarks while hosting members of the East Regional Working Committee of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) during a courtesy visit to the Government House. The delegation was led by its regional chairman, Comrade Odo Nweke, who also heads the Enugu State chapter of the union.
Speaking during the meeting, Otti said his government has deliberately focused on improving education through increased funding, better learning facilities, and policies aimed at boosting the welfare and capacity of teachers.
He explained that the state has consistently dedicated about 20 percent of its annual budget to the education sector over the past three years, describing the move as a clear demonstration of the administration’s commitment to rebuilding public education.
The governor also highlighted several initiatives introduced by his government, including the renovation and construction of school facilities, recruitment of additional teachers, improved salary payments, and training programmes designed to strengthen teaching quality across public schools.
According to him, early signs from the reforms are already visible in improved student performance and increasing school enrolment across the state.
Otti assured the visiting union leaders that requests presented by the teachers would receive careful consideration, adding that his administration values the role educators play in shaping the future of the state.
Earlier, the regional chairman of the NUT commended the Abia government for its efforts in revitalising the education system and improving teachers’ welfare. Nweke said the union decided to visit the governor to personally acknowledge the progress made in the sector.
He cited the consistent budgetary allocation to education, recruitment of thousands of teachers, prompt salary payments, settlement of salary arrears inherited from previous administrations, and the construction of smart schools as some of the achievements recorded under the current administration.
The union leader noted that teachers across the eastern region are encouraged by the developments in Abia and pledged continued support for policies that promote quality education and improved conditions for educators.
Several top government officials were present during the meeting, including the Secretary to the State Government, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, and other senior aides to the governor.
