Abuja Commuters Struggle With Soaring Transport Costs After Petrol Prices Spike

Residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) say they are feeling the pinch as transport fares jump sharply soon after petrol prices were increased in the area.

Commuters reported that rides which previously cost around ₦500–₦800 now range from ₦1,000 to ₦1,200, with longer trips even more expensive.

Many passengers described how daily travel expenses are taking a bigger bite out of their budgets, noting that even small increases add up over multiple trips each week.

Drivers and transport operators explained they raised fares because fuel costs have surged, leaving them little choice but to adjust charges to avoid losses.

Some commuters also worry that rising transport costs will push up the prices of goods, especially food, as traders often pass these increases on to consumers.

Economists note that higher fuel prices usually trigger wider increases in the cost of living, particularly through transport and food expenses.

Overall, FCT residents face mounting economic pressure as petrol price hikes translate quickly into heavier travel costs across the capital.
