The Anambra State Police Command has detained six officers following allegations that they extorted ₦200,000 from a trader in Onitsha. The development came after a video of the incident circulated on social media, drawing public criticism and prompting authorities to launch an investigation.
Reports indicate that the victim, a drinks seller, was stopped by the officers while transporting goods he had purchased for his business. Despite presenting the necessary vehicle documents, the officers allegedly held him and demanded a large sum of money before allowing him to leave.
The trader reportedly pleaded with the officers after they initially demanded ₦500,000. He later transferred ₦200,000 through a Point-of-Sale operator to secure his release.
Following the public outcry, the state Commissioner of Police ordered the immediate detention of the officers involved as investigations continue. Authorities also confirmed that the money taken from the trader has been returned while further steps are being taken to identify the PoS operator involved in the transaction.
