Former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has suggested that Nnamdi Kanu remains in detention due to his refusal to negotiate with the federal government. Sowore noted that other activists, like Sunday Igboho, chose to engage with authorities and were subsequently released or allowed more freedom.
According to Sowore, Kanu’s decision to reject government offers is a reflection of his uncompromising approach to his political objectives. He argued that this steadfastness, while principled, has prolonged the IPOB leader’s custody.
Sowore also highlighted the contrast in strategies among separatist figures, pointing out that while some activists prioritize negotiation for immediate relief, others, like Kanu, prioritize long-term goals over short-term concessions.
He further warned that political negotiations often carry risks, emphasizing that refusing to compromise can attract extended legal or political pressure, but may also preserve credibility and public support among followers.
