The Delta State Government has condemned the alleged harassment and assault of women during the Ozoro Festival, describing the incidents as barbaric, unacceptable, and a serious violation of human dignity.
In a statement issued in Asaba, the State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, expressed concern over reports that some women were harassed and, in certain cases, sexually assaulted during the celebration.
He emphasized that cultural festivals must not be used as a cover for criminal acts, noting that such behaviour has no place in a civilised society.
“The Delta State Government strongly condemns the harassment of women and the reported cases of rape during the Ozoro Festival. Such acts are completely unacceptable,” Aniagwu said.
He called on the police and other security agencies to launch an immediate investigation and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
Aniagwu also reassured residents of the government’s commitment to protecting the rights and safety of all citizens, particularly women and other vulnerable groups. He urged community leaders and festival organisers to put in place stronger safeguards to prevent a recurrence.
Reiterating the state’s zero tolerance for gender-based violence, the commissioner warned that offenders would face the full weight of the law.
