Maiduguri, Borno State, Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has disclosed that security agencies are currently tracking two suspected suicide bombers still at large in Maiduguri following a series of deadly explosions in the city.
Speaking during an interview, Zulum said intelligence reports revealed that five attackers had infiltrated the state capital. He noted that three of them had already carried out attacks, while efforts are ongoing to locate and stop the remaining two suspects.
The explosions, which occurred on Monday evening, hit several locations, including the Post Office area, Monday Market, and the entrance of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital. The incidents happened as many Muslim residents were preparing to break their Ramadan fast.
At least 23 people lost their lives, while about 100 others were injured, making it one of the most severe attacks recorded in the region in recent months.
The Nigerian Army has linked the coordinated attacks to Boko Haram, a militant group that has operated in the Northeast for over a decade.
Zulum assured residents that security forces are working tirelessly to prevent further attacks.
“We have credible intelligence that five attackers entered Maiduguri. Three have already detonated their devices, and we are currently tracking the remaining two,” the governor said, expressing confidence that they would be stopped.
He also expressed sympathy for the victims, noting that he received news of the incident while he was in Saudi Arabia.
“As governor and chief security officer of the state, this is deeply painful. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. I want to assure the people that this situation will be brought under control,” he added.
Since returning to the country, the governor has held strategic meetings with security chiefs to strengthen response measures.
The incident underscores the persistent security challenges in northeastern Nigeria, despite ongoing military operations against insurgent groups.
