Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen has recounted an early setback during his first call-up to the Super Eagles, revealing how he was initially turned away by a senior player before receiving support from teammate Kelechi Iheanacho.

Speaking during a live session on Twitch with comedian Carter Efe, the Napoli forward shared the experience, which dates back to 2017 when he was newly invited to the national team.

Osimhen said he visited Iheanacho—then a Manchester City player—as a sign of respect and willingness to assist him. However, upon arriving at Iheanacho’s room, he was stopped by another player who refused him entry.

“I met Iheanacho and told him I would help carry his boots. He asked me to come to his room and gave me the number,” Osimhen said. “But when I got there and knocked, his roommate opened the door and sent me away.”

According to Osimhen, Iheanacho later found out what had happened and reacted angrily, insisting that he be allowed in.

“Iheanacho came and was upset. He said, ‘Someone came to see me and you’re sending him away?’ Then he took me inside,” he added.

The incident, Osimhen noted, reflects some of the challenges young players face when trying to settle into senior teams, while also highlighting the importance of support from experienced teammates.

Osimhen is currently in Nigeria recovering from a broken arm sustained while playing for Galatasaray in a UEFA Champions League match against Liverpool.
