The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has rejected the federal government’s plan to inject ₦6 trillion into the power sector, describing it as an ineffective bailout for electricity companies.
Instead, the NLC is advocating for deeper reforms, including merging the Federal Ministry of Petroleum and the Federal Ministry of Power into a single Ministry of Energy. The union believes this unified ministry would better coordinate Nigeria’s energy policy and address the ongoing electricity shortages.
According to the union, simply providing financial support to power companies will not resolve the underlying issues. Past attempts to boost power output through funding have failed, and structural reforms are needed to ensure sustainable development of the country’s energy resources.
The NLC’s position reflects growing frustration with repeated grid instability and prolonged blackouts that have persisted despite government interventions.
