Madrid, Spain – Real Madrid came from behind to secure a thrilling 3-2 victory against city rivals Atletico Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday, thanks to a second-half brace from Vinicius Junior. The win keeps Los Blancos in the La Liga title race, closing the gap on leaders Barcelona to just four points.
Atletico took an early lead against the run of play in the 33rd minute when Ademola Lookman finished off a clever backheel from Giuliano Simeone. The goal silenced the Bernabeu, putting Diego Simeone’s side ahead at halftime.
The game turned on its head after the break. Vinicius Junior drew Real Madrid level from the penalty spot in the 52nd minute after Brahim Diaz was brought down by David Hancko in the box. Just three minutes later, Federico Valverde seized on a defensive error to slot home the second goal, giving the hosts the advantage.
Atletico responded in spectacular fashion when Nahuel Molina unleashed a 25-yard strike into the top corner in the 66th minute to make it 2-2. However, Vinicius Junior restored Madrid’s lead six minutes later, curling in his second goal of the night, his 10th in 11 matches, after a precise pass from substitute Trent Alexander-Arnold.
The closing stages were tense. Valverde received a straight red card in the 77th minute for a reckless challenge on Alex Baena, and Atletico came close to equalizing when Julian Alvarez struck the post. Despite the pressure, Real held firm to claim their first La Liga derby win over Atletico since September 2022.
