Farmers Advised to Prepare for Heavy Rainfall

Agricultural experts in Nigeria have urged farmers to prepare for periods of heavy rainfall and unpredictable weather as the planting season begins. They noted that while early showers may appear favorable, the conditions could become irregular and disrupt farming activities.

Experts warned that sudden downpours followed by dry spells could affect crops, and planting too early might expose them to stress, reduce yields, or even lead to losses. Farmers are advised to carefully plan their planting schedules to avoid potential setbacks.

In addition to timing their planting, farmers are encouraged to monitor weather updates closely and adopt climate-smart practices such as planned irrigation and strategic farm management. These measures can help mitigate risks associated with erratic rainfall.

Observers emphasized that smallholder farmers, especially women in rural communities, are particularly vulnerable to changing weather patterns. They called for improved early warning systems and agricultural support services to help farmers safeguard crops and maintain food production.
