The Nigerian Navy has handed over eight individuals suspected of oil theft to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after recovering about 44,000 litres of diesel in Rivers State. The suspects and the seized fuel were transferred to the commission for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The arrests followed intelligence reports of illegal bunkering activities in Degema and Obologbo communities. During a naval patrol on March 22, 2026, a boat carrying armed individuals was intercepted. The suspects attempted to flee, but a search revealed 423 sacks of diesel, each containing 106 litres, totaling approximately 44,000 litres.
At the handover, EFCC officials confirmed that the suspects would be thoroughly interrogated and prosecuted if evidence of wrongdoing is established. One of the suspects claimed he was unaware the activity was illegal, stating that he was only a loader in the operation.
The operation is part of ongoing efforts by security agencies to combat illegal oil refining in the Niger Delta, a practice that continues to harm Nigeria’s economy and environment. Authorities emphasized their commitment to dismantling criminal networks involved in fuel theft and ensuring accountability for those involved.
