Tensions have escalated between Nigeria’s broadcasting community and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, following a controversial comment he made during a televised programme.
The Independent Broadcasters Association of Nigeria (IBAN) has condemned the minister’s remark, calling on him to retract it and offer a public apology to journalist Seun Okinbaloye and the wider media community. The group described the statement as inappropriate and unbecoming of a public office holder.
Wike’s comment, which referenced shooting the journalist in a figurative manner, has drawn backlash from media stakeholders. Although the minister later suggested that his words were not meant to be taken literally, IBAN insists that such language can be interpreted as threatening and may worsen the already tense working conditions faced by journalists.
The association also highlighted broader concerns about press freedom in the country, noting that media practitioners often operate under pressure and intimidation. It stressed that public officials must be mindful of their language and avoid statements that could be seen as endorsing hostility toward journalists.
IBAN has demanded a clear apology and a commitment from the minister to respect the role of the media. It warned that failure to comply could result in a nationwide boycott of the minister’s press briefings by independent broadcasters.
Despite the standoff, the group indicated that it remains open to resolving the matter amicably if appropriate steps are taken.
