Three Nigerian travellers who were stranded at an international airport in Johannesburg have now departed South Africa and are expected to land in Lagos shortly, following efforts by Nigerian authorities.
The situation drew public attention after one of the affected passengers raised concerns online, claiming that he and others were detained despite possessing valid travel documents. The post triggered swift engagement from the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), which worked with officials to resolve the matter.
Authorities later confirmed that the individuals had been cleared to leave and were placed on a return flight to Nigeria. Their arrival is anticipated at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport.
NiDCOM, while welcoming their safe return, used the incident to caution Nigerians planning trips abroad. The commission warned against relying on unverified visa agents and urged travellers to personally review all submitted information, noting that inconsistencies during immigration checks can lead to denial of entry. It also highlighted that online activities, including social media posts, may influence how travellers are assessed by foreign authorities.
