Beşiktaş midfielder Wilfred Ndidi has publicly criticised officiating in the Turkish Süper Lig following his team’s narrow 1–0 loss to rivals Fenerbahçe in the intense Istanbul derby on Sunday.
The highly anticipated match remained tight for most of the game, with both sides struggling to break the deadlock. However, deep into stoppage time, the contest was decided by a controversial penalty that was awarded to Fenerbahçe. Despite the presence of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology, the on-field decision was not reviewed before it was upheld, frustrating Ndidi and several of his teammates.
The penalty was converted by Kerem Aktürkoğlu, handing Fenerbahçe the victory and leaving Beşiktaş to rue the late call. After the final whistle, Ndidi took to social media to vent his disappointment, questioning why the VAR system was not used to check the play. “How can you have VAR and decide not to check? I’m still trying to understand,” he wrote.
Adding to his frustration, Ndidi also picked up a booking during the match that triggers a suspension, ruling him out of Beşiktaş’s next league fixture.
The result not only dealt a blow to Beşiktaş’s title hopes but also reignited debate about officiating standards and the effectiveness of video review in crucial Turkish league matches.
