A coalition of former governors from Nigeria’s South-East has emerged with a shared commitment to accelerate development and foster stronger cooperation across the region.
The group, operating under a newly established forum, convened its first gathering in Enugu, bringing together prominent past leaders such as Martin Elechi, Chris Ngige, Sullivan Chime, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, David Umahi, and Okezie Ikpeazu.
Positioning itself as a non-partisan body, the forum emphasized collaboration over political differences, noting that challenges like economic slowdown, infrastructure deficits, and perceived marginalization require collective action.
Members expressed readiness to leverage their governance experience and influence to shape policies, support impactful projects, and encourage long-term economic progress within the South-East.
They also revealed plans to expand engagement beyond the region by forming strategic alliances nationwide to strengthen the South-East’s role in Nigeria’s broader economic and political landscape.
In addition, the forum acknowledged ongoing infrastructure efforts by the Federal Government, praising major road developments such as the Enugu–Aba–Port Harcourt route, Enugu–Onitsha road, Owerri–Umuika axis, and the Umuahia–Ikot Ekpene corridor. According to them, these projects are crucial for enhancing connectivity, boosting commerce, and advancing regional integration if properly executed and maintained.
