Camp Nou, Barcelona, Spain – Atletico Madrid produced a stunning 2-0 victory over Barcelona at the Camp Nou on Wednesday night, ending a 26-match winless run at the venue and taking a strong advantage in their UEFA Champions League quarter-final tie.
The encounter swung in Atletico’s favor after Barcelona were reduced to 10 men in the first half following a red card to Pau Cubarsí. Despite the setback, Hansi Flick’s side showed resilience and continued to press for a breakthrough. Marcus Rashford came close to restoring parity in the second half, but his powerful free-kick was expertly tipped onto the crossbar by Atletico goalkeeper Juan Musso.
Atletico, however, made their chances count. Having taken the lead earlier in the match, Alexander Sørloth extended the advantage in the 70th minute, finishing first time from a Ruggeri cross to silence the home supporters.
Barcelona pushed forward in the closing stages in search of a lifeline, but their efforts fell short. A late attempt from Dani Olmo in stoppage time summed up a frustrating night for the La Liga leaders, who struggled to convert their chances.
The result places Atletico Madrid in a commanding position ahead of the second leg at the Metropolitano next week. The winner of the tie will face either Arsenal or Sporting Lisbon in the semi-finals.
