Umuahia, Abia State — The Special Adviser on Basic and Secondary Education, Kenechukwu Nwosu, has commended Alex Otti for implementing what he described as a far-reaching and evidence-based transformation of the education sector in Abia State.
Nwosu spoke during an interview hosted by the Abia Radio and Television Executives (ARTEX), an association recognized for promoting professional broadcasting and providing a reliable platform for public information. He praised ARTEX for highlighting developmental issues and giving citizens insight into government reforms.
According to him, the state government’s policies in education are built on an empirical approach, ensuring decisions are based on data, verified needs, and measurable outcomes.
He revealed that Governor Otti approved the employment of 5,395 teachers across the state. These teachers, he noted, were properly trained before being onboarded into public schools to ensure improved learning standards.
The adviser further disclosed that the Governor provided a counterpart fund of ₦80 billion to strengthen the education sector, covering infrastructure upgrades, learning facilities, and essential resources.
Nwosu stated that the Governor’s policies and programs have restored confidence in public schools and brought back their former standards and reputation.
He also highlighted the Smart Schools initiative, which includes the development of 20 Smart Schools. Seventeen of the schools will be located across the state’s Local Government Areas, while three Mega Smart Schools will be established in the three senatorial zones. These schools will feature modern learning technologies and improved educational facilities.
On the issue of out-of-school children, he said the administration has set a target to significantly reduce the number before 2027 through expanded access, better facilities, and improved teaching quality.
Addressing concerns about the exclusion of Igbo history in some approved textbooks, Nwosu said the government is reviewing educational materials to ensure that local history and cultural identity are properly represented.
Security in schools, he added, remains a top priority. The Governor has directed homeland security authorities to recruit and deploy security personnel to schools across the state, while all school premises are to be properly fenced for safety.
Nwosu emphasized that the Governor’s broader reform agenda focuses on maintaining uniform standards in infrastructure, personnel, and learning conditions throughout Abia State.
He concluded by reiterating that with strategic planning, strong funding, and continued collaboration with stakeholders and media platforms like ARTEX, the future of education in Abia State is on a steady path of growth and excellence.
