The International Association of World Peace Advocates (IAWPA) has announced that Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, will be honoured as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Personality of the Year in Africa 2025. This recognition will be formally declared during the United Nations High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) scheduled to take place in New York from July 14 to 29, 2025.

Speaking on behalf of the organisation, IAWPA International Spokesman, Ambassador Emmanuel Nkweke, praised Governor Otti’s exceptional leadership and dedication to advancing the SDGs in Abia State. According to him, Governor Otti has demonstrated remarkable progress in several key SDG areas, including poverty reduction, quality education, and improved healthcare delivery.

“His administration has implemented impactful policies aimed at reducing poverty, improving the quality of education, and strengthening healthcare systems to ensure better access to medical services,” Nkweke noted.

IAWPA, which has held Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) since 2019, remains committed to global peacebuilding and the promotion of sustainable development. The association’s efforts span advocacy, training, and fostering partnerships among governments, civil society, and the private sector to accelerate SDG achievement.

A seven-member delegation from IAWPA, led by Ambassador Lawrence Oluwaseun Adeniyi, the association’s UN SDG Focal Point, will participate in the HLPF. The group’s engagement will include presenting a position paper, promoting global partnerships, and a courtesy visit to Ambassador Syndoph Endoni at the Permanent Mission of Nigeria to the UN on July 16, 2025.

Ambassador Nkweke emphasized that Governor Otti’s selection for this continental honour reflects his visionary approach and tangible contributions toward sustainable development in Nigeria and Africa. He extended congratulations to the governor and expressed hope for continued collaboration in fostering peace and sustainability.
