The Deputy General Manager of the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA), Umuahia Zone, Catchist Ambrose Jonah, has reaffirmed the agency’s dedication to ensuring a clean and healthy environment across the state.
Speaking to journalists in Umuahia, Jonah emphasized that indiscriminate burning and dumping of refuse remain strictly prohibited. He revealed that Governor Alex Otti has charged ASEPA with the responsibility of making Abia the cleanest state in Nigeria, with the second half of the year focused on sustained waste evacuation efforts.
Jonah’s remarks come in the wake of a recent weeklong retreat organized by Governor Otti to evaluate the administration’s performance for the year 2025.
Highlighting the importance of environmental hygiene, the ASEPA DGM called on residents to support the government by properly bagging their waste and disposing of it responsibly. He announced that street-to-street waste evacuation is already underway and advised residents to make use of designated waste buckets between 5 p.m. and 6 a.m.
Jonah also disclosed that ASEPA has launched an active campaign against open defecation within Umuahia, as part of broader efforts to improve sanitation and public health in the state.
