The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested the alleged mastermind behind the recent assassination attempt on former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, in Benin, Edo State.
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, along with Chief John Oyegun, ex-governor of Edo State, and other leaders of the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC), narrowly escaped death on February 24 when armed attackers opened fire during a party meeting in Benin.
Following the attack, a man identified as Udeme Monday Stephen posted on X (@stevetom788), claiming responsibility for the incident and threatening further attacks on Obi. In his post, Stephen warned that Obi “was lucky to survive in Benin” and suggested the former presidential candidate would not be as fortunate in the future.
Stephen wrote:
> “We warned Obi against entering Edo State, but he mistook our resolve for online noise. Thank his stars he survived… I hear he’s heading to Rivers State—my men will handle that, and they don’t miss their target.”
A senior security source revealed that DSS operatives swiftly launched a covert investigation, using forensic analysis to track and apprehend Stephen. The suspect, 26, teaches at Jessica High School in Eliozu, Rivers State, within the Umuehere Community of Obio-Akpor LGA.
The source confirmed:
> “The agency’s forensic investigations implicated the suspect. As a responsible security organization tasked with counter-espionage and VIP protection, the DSS acted promptly. The suspect who threatened Peter Obi is now in custody and will soon face court proceedings.”
