Liverpool manager Arne Slot has admitted that Trent Alexander-Arnold’s high-profile move to Real Madrid has left a creative gap in the squad, but believes new signing Florian Wirtz is already showing signs of filling that void.

The Merseyside giants broke their transfer record in June to secure the signature of the 21-year-old German international from Bayer Leverkusen. Wirtz, who boasts an impressive 57 goals and 65 assists in 197 appearances for the Bundesliga side, made his first appearance in a Liverpool shirt during Sunday’s 3–2 pre-season win over Athletic Bilbao at Anfield.

Speaking after the match, Slot praised Wirtz’s immediate impact and highlighted the need to reinforce the squad following the loss of Alexander-Arnold, a key creative force in recent seasons.

“Trent brought a lot of creativity from deep, his passing, vision and delivery were special,” said Slot. “Florian offers that same kind of magic in the final third, albeit from a very different position. He’s got vision, technical ability and a great instinct for unlocking defences.”

Slot also highlighted the club’s attacking reinforcements, including the pace of new additions Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, and Jeremie Frimpong, saying they offer “extra weapons” in the upcoming campaign.

With Liverpool coming off a triumphant Premier League campaign, clinching a record-equalling 20th English title, Slot stressed the importance of strengthening the team in the face of growing competition.

“Our rivals are not standing still,” he said. “Everyone is looking to improve. That’s why we’ve been active in the market, to ensure we stay competitive. It’s shaping up to be another fascinating season.”

Liverpool’s season officially kicks off on August 10 when they face FA Cup holders Crystal Palace in the Community Shield. They begin their Premier League title defence at home to Bournemouth on August 15.
