Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering improved healthcare, education, and infrastructure across the state, outlining key achievements during a media chat with journalists.

Speaking on the health sector, Governor Otti revealed that 200 primary health centres were earmarked for completion within three months, with 120 already delivered. The scope of the project, he said, has been expanded to include accommodation for teachers, ensuring better retention of skilled manpower in rural areas. He added that many of the centres are already operational and capable of handling most medical needs, while all general hospitals in the state have been fixed. Notably, the Umunnato facility has been converted into a specialist hospital, the cottage hospital in Abayi, Aba, is nearing completion, and the Amachara General Hospital has been fully rehabilitated.

On education, the governor restated that his administration has made schooling free and compulsory in Abia State. He disclosed that 5,395 teachers have been employed to strengthen teaching quality. Infrastructure development in the sector is also on the rise, with smart schools being built, including one completed in Umuahia and 61 others at various stages of construction. A total of 2,021 primary and secondary schools are currently receiving attention, he said.

Governor Otti further noted significant progress in tertiary institutions, including upgrades at the Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, where work is ongoing at the new Osisioma campus. The Abia State College of Education, Arochukwu, is also benefiting from improvements to internal roads and other facilities, while Abia State University hostels are being retrofitted. The teaching hospital in Aba is advancing to a higher stage of training medical doctors.

In the area of power supply, the governor revealed that the state is finalizing arrangements to acquire certain local government electricity assets currently under the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), saying the transaction is at the consummation stage.

Governor Otti emphasized that these initiatives reflect his administration’s determination to reposition Abia as a hub for quality healthcare, sound education, and sustainable development.
