In a significant political development, State Governor Dr. Alex Otti officially welcomed former Deputy Governor Rt. Hon. Sir Ude Okochukwu into the Labour Party on Saturday, hailing the defection as a “bold and weighty political move.”
Okochukwu, who recently stepped down from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), made the switch to the Labour Party alongside numerous PDP loyalists and his political network, the Abia Vision Rangers.
The grand reception took place in Okochukwu’s hometown of Nkporo, Ohafia Local Government Area, drawing a large crowd of party leaders and supporters. During the event, Governor Otti assured the former Deputy Governor of equitable treatment and equal opportunities within the Labour Party.
“This is a party that does not discriminate; there is no difference between him joining today and those of us who came earlier. Once you are a member of the party, you have equal rights and opportunities,” Governor Otti stated.
The Governor characterized Okochukwu as a longstanding friend who has consistently exhibited fairness and respect, even when their political paths diverged.
“Rt. Hon. Ude Okochukwu has been my friend and brother, even when we were in different camps. He is a public official who respects and acknowledges others, both as Deputy Governor and in his current role,” Otti remarked.
The reception marks a pivotal moment for both Okochukwu and the Labour Party, reflecting a shift in the political landscape of the state as they aim to strengthen their influence in the region.
