The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has tracked 1,440 government-funded projects worth over ₦271 billion across the Northwest and Northeast regions, recovering billions in cash and assets in the process.

ICPC Chairman, Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, disclosed this at a press briefing in Kano yesterday. According to him, 767 projects valued at ₦112 billion were tracked in the Northwest, while 673 projects worth ₦158 billion were monitored in the Northeast.

Aliyu said the exercise had produced “tangible results,” with recoveries including ₦7.269 billion in cash and $1.066 million in foreign currency from the Northwest, as well as ₦43.335 million from the Northeast. Additionally, the agency confiscated 14 buildings, 25 plots of land, and three farmlands in the Northwest.

“Our tracking exercise is not just about monitoring projects; it has also yielded significant recoveries in cash and assets. These resources are being redirected for public benefit,” he stated.

On enforcement, the ICPC reported that 171 corruption-related cases were investigated across both regions 117 from the Northwest and 54 from the Northeast. These led to 16 court cases and eight convictions.

The Chairman commended the media for exposing abandoned and poorly executed projects, stressing that journalists play a vital role in ensuring accountability.

The project-tracking initiative, he noted, is part of efforts to guarantee that public funds are effectively used in underserved communities. He added that the commission would extend the exercise to other regions, calling for stronger collaboration with civil society groups and citizens.
