In a bold and uncompromising move that strikes at the conscience of national leadership, Hon. Obinna Aguocha, Chairman of the House Committee on Monitoring and Evaluation of all Standing and Ad-hoc Committees of the 10th House of Representatives, has issued urgent petitions to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Attorney General of the Federation, Chief Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, over the worsening health of detained IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
In two letters dated August 27, 2025, Aguocha raised the alarm on Kanu’s “multiple organ insufficiency,” warning that his condition has deteriorated to life-threatening levels. He cautioned that continued confinement without critical medical intervention now borders on a humanitarian catastrophe and a violation of constitutional responsibility.
Recounting his personal visit to Kanu on August 21, alongside distressing reports from legal and medical teams, Aguocha confirmed that the IPOB leader’s health is on a steep decline. “It is clear that his physical condition continues to deteriorate significantly. A recent medical report… indicates that MNK has multiple organ insufficiency, which urgently requires specialist hospital-based care,” he emphasized.
The federal lawmaker presented two immediate courses of action: that the DSS be directed to transfer Kanu without delay to a properly equipped hospital as advised by his doctors, or, alternatively, that the Federal Government constitute an independent panel of medical experts to examine his condition and guarantee urgent access to specialist treatment.
Aguocha minced no words in condemning delay or political hesitation, stressing that the matter has transcended partisan divides. “This appeal is now beyond any political consideration. It is a humanitarian and constitutional imperative,” he declared, urging Tinubu and the AGF to act in defense of justice, dignity, and due process.

He enclosed a detailed medical report to buttress his appeal, warning that hesitation could result in irreversible consequences. His letters, written with principled urgency, directly challenge the Federal Government to prove that the sanctity of human life outweighs political sentiment.
This intervention is expected to reignite fierce debate over the federal government’s handling of Nnamdi Kanu’s prolonged detention, while intensifying scrutiny on President Tinubu’s commitment to human rights, constitutional order, and the rule of law
