As schools reopen across the country, South West Chieftain of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Ambassador Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, has appealed to government and private schools to halt the practice of frequently changing textbooks each academic session.
Ajadi, a businessman and philanthropist, expressed worry over the financial strain such changes place on parents, many of whom are already struggling under current economic conditions.
He recalled that in the past, families often saved costs by allowing younger children to reuse textbooks handed down from older siblings. This tradition, he noted, significantly reduced household expenses.
“The constant change of textbooks every term or year has become a heavy burden on parents. In our time, siblings reused the same textbooks, but today parents are groaning under the weight of continuous purchases,” Ajadi stated in a release on Monday.
He urged the Minister of Education and state governors to address the trend and further called on both federal and state governments to subsidize textbook costs. According to him, this would ease the financial pressure on parents while improving access to quality education.
“I really sympathize with parents who are compelled to buy different sets of textbooks for their children each term. This practice should not continue,” Ajadi added.
