The Guild of Sports Editors of Nigeria has expressed deep disappointment with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) over its handling of the Super Eagles’ bid to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Nigeria currently sits third in Group C of the African qualifiers with 11 points, trailing South Africa (17 points) and Benin Republic (14 points) with just two games left. While the group winner earns automatic qualification, only the best four second-placed teams stand a chance of advancing through playoffs. With the current standings, Nigeria’s hopes remain slim unless results drastically turn in their favour.

In a statement signed by its president, Tony Ubani, and secretary, Dare Esan, the Guild blamed poor planning, indecision, and indiscipline for Nigeria’s precarious position. They criticized the NFF for delays in hiring a substantive coach after parting ways with Jose Peseiro, mismanaging the Finidi George situation, and failing to enforce discipline within the squad. The editors also faulted the federation for allowing unnecessary distractions in the Super Eagles’ camp and overlooking the advantage South Africa gained when Zimbabwe and Lesotho hosted their “home” matches in South Africa.

The Guild further lamented Nigeria’s lack of alternative venues beyond the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, urging the Federal Government to rehabilitate the Abuja and Lagos national stadia as well as facilities in Kaduna and Enugu. While describing the campaign as already compromised by costly home draws, the editors called for urgent government support to ensure the Eagles win their last two matches and at least keep hopes alive for a playoff spot.
