Former President Thabo Mbeki has commended KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi for his bold revelations about corruption within the country’s criminal justice system.

Mkhwanazi’s claims, which include allegations linking Police Minister Senzo Mchunu to crime syndicates, are currently under investigation by the Madlanga Commission.

Speaking on the sidelines of the African National Congress (ANC) political school in Durban, Mbeki said the ANC’s credibility had been eroded by individuals who joined the party in pursuit of personal gain.

“I’m very glad that Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi had the courage to speak out,” Mbeki said. “At last, we have the possibility to expose the rot through the Madlanga Commission, giving the country a clear picture of the state of our criminal justice system. We must identify who these criminals are, how they operate, and provide a comprehensive response to crime and corruption.”

At the close of the political school, provincial task team convener Jeff Radebe delivered a declaration highlighting resolutions for organisational renewal. Among the key measures adopted were compulsory reapplications for ANC membership, lifestyle audits, and stricter entry criteria for new members.

The statement further emphasised the need for probationary periods, political education programmes, and monitoring systems to strengthen accountability within the party.
