The Sultan of Sokoto and Chairman of the National Traditional Rulers Council of Nigeria, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has paid a condolence visit to the family of the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.

The Sultan, who was in the South West for the coronation of former Oyo State Governor, Senator Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, visited the Adetona family shortly after the Ibadan ceremony.

He was received by Prince Saud Adedire Adetona, heir of the royal family, before proceeding to the tomb of the late monarch who died on July 13, 2025, at the age of 91 and offered prayers for the repose of his soul.

The Sultan was later hosted at a modest reception attended by prominent Ijebu leaders, including the Regent of Ijebuland, Olor’ogun Dr. Sonny Folorunso Kuku, who also serves as the Ogbeni Oja of Ijebuland; the Olori Omo Oba Ijebu, Dr. Kunle Hassan; as well as members of the royal family and community.

Also present were the widows of the late Awujale, Olori Iyabode Adetona and Olori Modupe Adetona, alongside several of his children.

In his welcome remarks, Regent Kuku recalled his long-standing bond with the Sultan, noting their shared history as students of King’s College Lagos and Barewa College Zaria. He described the Sultan’s visit as a profound gesture of solidarity and friendship between their peoples.

“The Sultan’s presence here is a testament to the strong bonds of brotherhood that unite our communities,” Kuku said, while expressing gratitude on behalf of the royal household.
