The Lagos State Government has called on teachers to continually invest in self-development and professionalism to keep pace with evolving trends in education.

Chairman of the Lagos State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), Mopelola Peregrino, made the appeal during the third annual one-day colloquium and training for teachers, held to mark World Teachers’ Day 2025.

She stressed that continuous learning is vital for teachers to remain effective, adding that this year’s theme, “The Impact of Industrial Relations Policies on Teachers’ Performance,” was chosen to highlight the role workplace policies play in improving job satisfaction and productivity.

“As a government, we will continue to introduce policies that ensure fair treatment, reasonable workloads, and timely compensation,” Peregrino assured. “We are equally committed to creating effective grievance resolution mechanisms to boost morale and inspire productivity.”

Guest lecturer, Isaac Olatunde, emphasized the importance of harmony between teachers and employers, noting that mutual understanding was key to achieving optimal performance.

Also speaking, Lagos State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Akintoye Hassan, identified the UNESCO-recommended student-teacher ratio of 1:25 as a lingering challenge. He, however, commended ongoing recruitment efforts by TESCOM and SUBEB, while urging the government to implement the 65-year retirement age policy for teachers.

Peregrino added that the annual colloquium serves as a platform for stakeholders to exchange ideas, inspire innovation, and reinforce professionalism within the teaching profession.
